3 Ways Blogging Is Like Running

In this short video Julie explains the three ways that blogging is a lot like running.

I'm sitting at home on a cold, wet, windy day, trying to motivate myself to go out for a run. I'm struggling a bit and it made me think that running and blogging are actually very similar.

It Feels Like a Chore

Running on a day like this feels like a bit of a chore; it's hard to get yourself out there, there are lots of other things that I could be doing, I'm busy, I'm tired, I have plenty of other things that sound a lot more appealing than going for a run right now. And blogging is a bit like that. You know you should be doing it, you maybe have some ideas in your head for a blog post, but you're busy, you've got lots of other things on your to-do list, an it's not very appealing because you know you have to sit down and think about it for a little while and it's going to be hard work. So yep, it's a bit of a chore.

Wider Benefits

But the thing about both running and blogging is that when you do it you feel much better. You get out for a run, and when you come back in you feel great. You write that blog post and you're so glad to get it ticked off your list. And not only that... it has huge benefits. Running obviously has benefits for your physical health, your mental health, for weight loss and all sorts of things. Blogging is the same: it helps your business, it gives you something to post on social media, it makes you look like and expert in your subject and it's a great way of attracting more visitors to your website and once they are there for them to find out what you do and maybe get in touch with you or find out something else from your website - it's hugely beneficial. So, not only does it make you feel better to get it ticked off your list but it has massive benefits beyond that.

Make It A Habit

Thirdly, once running becomes a habit, if I don't go for a run for a while I actually miss it. I think, "what's wrong with me? Oh, I haven't been for a run!" Then I really look forward to getting out there, getting some fresh air and putting one foot in front of the other and I do miss it when I don't do it. Blogging is the same, once it becomes a habit and you get into the pattern of putting your thoughts down on paper or recording a video like this then you do miss it when you don't do it. You have these ideas in your head and you've got nowhere to put them. So, make it a habit, have a plan and you'll start to miss it when you don't do it.

Now I've recorded this video and got that ticked off my list, I guess I'm going to have to go for that run now!

Here's the evidence. It was very cold, but yes, I did feel better afterwards!
